Enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers are vital to AbilityFirst!
Without people who give of themselves, their time and their talents, we simply would not be able to provide the outstanding developmental programs and services that make such a difference in the lives of children and adults with disabilities. Volunteers work in our programs for children and adults under the supervision of AbilityFirst staff. They may provide one-on-one assistance to children or adults, encouraging participation, keeping activities going, and having fun!
Volunteer to help children with disabilities.
Our after school programs serve students with disabilities from the ages of 5 to 22.
This program provides a variety of experiences to help children establish and build basic life, communication, social and healthy living skills. Volunteers assist with whatever activities are planned for the day. These can include preparing snacks for the other participants, a variety of games from outdoor basketball games to indoor board games and computer games, in addition to many other activities. Everything is done age appropriately for the various age groups that attend. During the summer we run full programs but the largest concentration of students are at the Center during the afternoons. If you are looking for an afternoon activity, 3:00pm-6:00pm Mon. to Fri. would be the best fit. We can accommodate up to about 10 volunteers at a time. Most sites have Saturday programs and some have adult programs.
Locations: Claremont, East Los Angeles, Glendale, Inglewood, Pasadena and Long Beach
Volunteer to help adults with disabilities.
In these centers we prepare individuals for the challenges of a new job, including giving and accepting feedback, adapting to workplace culture and environment, interpersonal skills, and professionalism. Our participants earn a paycheck by working for our AbilityFirst packaging and fulfillment or shredding services business endeavors. Volunteers are always welcome to work with our adults to help the complete their assigned job tasks and just engage with them as they work. They are always excited to share what they do with the volunteers. The hours at these centers at 9:00am-3:00pm Mon. to Fri. Anytime during that space of time is fine for volunteers to come. We can accommodate about 10 volunteers at a time.
Locations: Pasadena and Los Angeles (near USC).
Volunteers are also essential to supporting our major and minor events. They assist with set up, tear down, check-in and other important duties.
And, they help keep our facilities running smoothly by performing a variety of important office tasks.
We have year-round volunteer opportunities at locations throughout Greater Los Angeles and summer time volunteer opportunities at beautiful Camp Paivika in the San Bernardino National Forest.
You will need to complete a volunteer application and attend an orientation at your local center before you begin volunteering.
