The Paul Weston Center hosted Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and
members of the community as part of a "Million Trees LA" community event.
The event was in collaboration with Girl Scout Althea Gaffney's Gold Award
Project and the City of Los Angeles. "Million Trees LA" is the Mayor's
initiative to plant one million trees in the City of Los Angeles over the
next several years. Residents of Woodland Hills and surrounding areas
visited the Paul Weston Center to adopt new trees for their homes and learn
more about how trees help the environment and recycling opportunities.
Althea, the Weston Cub Scout Pack, and Boy and Girl Scouts from the San
Fernando Valley planted trees along Winnetka Avenue, in front of the center, as well as the lawn of the center. While planting trees, Mayor Villaraigosa
discussed Los Angeles' waste production and its impact on the environment.
He encouraged recycling and planting new trees as ways to contribute to
making Los Angeles an even better place to live, now and in the future.
The Paul Weston Center recently launched its Cub Scout Pack (#88) as part of
its inclusion program that brings children with disabilities together with
their non-disabled peers. Under the direction of Scoutmaster Jesus Aviles,
the 14-member Pack meets on Saturdays at the Weston Center for regular
meetings.
